A fish surfboard is a short, wide board with a swallowtail design, typically ridden as a twin fin. Originally shaped in the 1970s, fish boards are built for speed and glide in small to medium waves. Their extra width and volume make them paddle faster than shortboards while still being maneuverable.
Fish surfboards shine in small to medium surf, roughly waist to head-high. They're perfect for mushy, slow days when a shortboard would struggle to generate speed. In Hawaii, a fish is a great quiver addition for the smaller south shore summer swells or mellow town surf.
A fish is almost always better for small waves. Its wider outline, extra volume, and twin fin setup generate speed in weak conditions where a shortboard would bog down. Shortboards excel in steeper, more powerful surf. Many surfers keep both in their quiver for different conditions.
