Is it cheaper to buy a used surfboard than rent on Oahu?
Yes, in most cases. Surfboard rentals on Oahu run $30-60/day. A used board on Barney can be found for $150-350. If you're staying more than a few days, buying and reselling is almost always cheaper than renting, and you get a real board instead of a beat-up rental.
How do I sell my surfboard before flying home?
List it on Barney using our community submission form at /submit. Many boards sell within a few days on Oahu. Price it competitively (10-20% below what you paid) for a quick sale. You can also post on Craigslist Oahu or the Hawaii Surfboard Exchange Facebook group.
Where can I pick up a surfboard on Oahu?
Most sellers on Barney are on Oahu and offer local pickup. Common meetup spots include parking lots near popular surf breaks. Craigslist sellers typically specify their town (Honolulu, North Shore, etc.) in the listing.
What kind of surfboard should I buy as a tourist?
For most visitors, a funboard (7'0"-8'0") or a mid-length (7'0"-7'6") is the best bet. These boards paddle easily, catch lots of waves, and work in a variety of conditions. If you're an experienced surfer, a fish or shortboard will let you rip at South Shore spots.
