Most longboards range from 8 to 10 feet. Beginners should start with a 9-foot board for stability and easy wave catching. Your weight matters too -- heavier riders benefit from longer, wider boards with more volume. A good rule of thumb is to choose a board with enough volume to float you easily.
Single fin longboards offer a smooth, classic glide and are ideal for noseriding and traditional longboard surfing. Tri fin (thruster) setups provide more control and maneuverability, making them better for progressive longboarding with cutbacks and turns. Many longboards offer a 2+1 setup that lets you switch between styles.
Beginners should look for longboards with extra width and thickness for maximum stability. Soft-top longboards are a great starting point as they're forgiving on wipeouts. For a fiberglass board, look for a 9-foot noserider with a wide nose and rounded rails -- these paddle easily and catch waves effortlessly.
